There is no embankment in Tarusa. From the high bank you descend straight to the water — if the bushes, of course, allow it. The shoreline is green. There are a couple of beaches, beach volleyball courts, and in the very center there is a small pier for small motor ships, although boats and other "small vessels" are moored directly to the coastline. But there is no traditional embankment — filled, stone, landscaped, with street lamps and benches, as is often the case in other towns.

But this does not mean that it is impossible to walk along the Oka here — on the contrary, there are plenty of various paths and trails. In a certain sense, the bank has been preserved in an authentic form, without embellishments and excessive pomp, although at first it looks a little strange: a town on the river, but no promenade. But then you understand that this is also good.

For those who like to have a snack with a view of the Oka, here it is possible to do so in a multitude of options — from a snack in the car in the corresponding parking lot to sitting in a respectable cafe. Only, in my opinion, there are too few benches; they seem to have been made deliberately few so that people would not sit too long in one place. Like, you should walk, not sit in one place. And coffee can also be taken to go.

As already noted in the previous gallery, the town is located on the high bank of the Oka. The houses do not descend to the water, especially since there are strong spring floods here, and sometimes even floods, which, given such a high bank, seems a little strange, but this is a real fact, recorded more than once in historical photographs (for example, here or here). In the area of the historical center, the town above the Oka rises by about 40–50 m. And if you takes into account all the hills and ravines, then in absolute numbers the difference in height can reach 100 m (source). Not to say that these are really some mountains, but for our plains such hills are not a frequent phenomenon.

Some call Dekabristov Street the embankment, which runs along the edge of the high cliff. There are also the Town Garden and the Fir Alley with several observation platforms. In my personal opinion, however, it is interesting to go to the spit where the Tarusa River flows into the Oka — also a very picturesque place.

Swimming here is not recommended; signs "No Swimming" are everywhere. On the Internet, people write about this that the water does not meet sanitary standards. In 2024, the town administration even published water sampling reports on its website (source), where the protocols indicate an exceedance for E. coli. That is, sewage is now being actively discharged into the Oka, and I do not think that the situation has changed radically over the past two years. So if anyone is planning a holiday with swimming, Tarusa is not the most suitable place. Although, perhaps, the local authorities are simply being overly cautious, since full-fledged beaches require equipping rescue stations, and there is always not enough money for this in Russian budgets. And not enough people either. And the river itself does not emit any extraneous smells; on the contrary, the water seems clean and pleasant.

So, after all, it is a resort. Due to its geographical location, the Tarusa bank is good for admiring sunrises. And it is a rather wide river for the middle zone of Russia, although we have many rivers (in Kaluga Oblast alone there are about 2000 of them). Therefore, undoubtedly, walks along the Oka in Tarusa are part of the local mandatory entertainment.

A viewing area for admiration and contemplation in the area of the Voskresenskaya Church, not far from the Igumnov ravine. By the way, within the framework of the VI All-Russian Competition of the Best Projects for Creating a Comfortable Urban Environment in 2022, Tarusa won with the project "Walks around Tarusa. The Banks". The grant amounted to 70 million rubles (source), and the platform in the photo was arranged within the framework of this project. In general, the project is quite large-scale (source), much has been done within its framework, thanks to which the town has indeed been transformed and become more comfortable. Therefore, the budget does not even seem very large for such work. And such areas are indeed exactly what this town needs. An excellent solution.

A monument to Marina Tsvetaeva in the Town Garden, opened in 2006. The idea to install a monument to Tsvetaeva belongs to Boris Messerer; his wife Bella Akhmadulina put a lot of effort into making this monument appear precisely in Tarusa. And the sculpture was created by Vladimir Soskiyev.

A monument to K.G. Paustovsky, opened in 2012 for the 120th anniversary of the writer. The sculptor is V.M. Tserkovnikov. The monument is based on a photograph of Paustovsky during a walk with his beloved dog Grozny — the writer got this dog in Tarusa. And in general, the monument conveys the impression that Konstantin Georgiyevich in this image forever remains one of those who lives in this town and will always live here.

Paths of the Town Garden.

Descent to the water next to the Alley of Heroes. A pedestrian zone, although it was not always so. It was precisely in this place that the pontoon bridge across the Oka was located (one can see how it was here or here), so once it was a full-fledged road. Well, in the understanding of the first half of the 20th century and earlier.

Obelisk of Glory to the Tarusa soldiers who died in battles for the Motherland in 1941–1945. A very modest, laconic monument. Next to it is a stele with the names of five local residents awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union (source). The author of the monument, unfortunately, is unknown.

These structures emerged within the framework of the project "Windows into the Past", which is created by the charitable foundation "Tarusa Heritage". The window casings are genuine, collected from local villages.

Fir Alley. So, you walk along the high bank and little by little educate yourself.

A view of the mouth of the Tarusa River and the bend of the Oka.

There are very many old trees here.

A cafe with a panoramic view.

This row of lacy trees grows along the bank of the Tarusa River.

Descending to the water, you admire the colors of autumn.

Bridge over the Tarusa River. This is a strategically important bridge for the town; it connects Tarusa with Serpukhov (and through it — with Moscow). In 1900, a permanent bridge was built on this place, but in 1941 it was blown up by Soviet troops during their retreat. After the war it was not restored immediately; there is evidence from the 1960s that the bridge was still not there and it was nessecesary to go via Kaluga. But later the bridge was nevertheless restored, and we see precisely it — the latest version to date, in reinforced concrete. In the gallery "Town in October", this bridge is depicted in the 2nd photograph.

A panoramic view of the central part of the town from the spit where two local rivers meet.

Here you can clearly see that the town is located as if on terraces.

From the extreme point of the bank at the mouth of the Tarusa River, part of the panorama is blocked by the opposite bank. The rusty bushes on the left are already Tula Oblast.

There are only two such loungers on the bank. We did not see any others. And you do not even know how to react to this. From the point of view of those who can rest on these chairs, the solution is, of course, excellent — solitude is guaranteed. But if there are more people wishing to sit here than two, then this is already a little problem))

Shore navigation sign of inland waterways "No Wake". Its task is to force passing vessels to reduce speed as much as possible, so that the wake (wave) does not rock the boats standing by the coastline and does not create problems for those on the bank itself at the water's edge.

These boulders are called erratic (i.e. wandering) — heirs of the Ice Age. When the glacier retreated, it dragged such stones behind it, which is why they are slightly worn.

Such big stones consist mainly of granite, quartzite or sandstone. The texture is unusual, not at all characteristic of the local limestones.

This elongated pile of stones currently has no functional purpose; it is simply an element of coastal design.

An old river buoy — a floating navigation marker that has been retired and placed on the shore.

Two more buoys — elements of coastal decor.

The walking area along the bank may be not very large, but it is nice and cozy, so it is pleasant to walk here, especially on a sunny day, when the air is clean and transparent, and the world around explodes with truly bright colors. Therefore, everyone who comes to this town to rest certainly comes to the coastal zone of the town, especially since the local authorities have arranged it very well in recent years. It is pleasant to see that the development of the town does not stand still. I think that local residents are also pleased to take another walk along the arranged little streets. That is why I say that Tarusa is a town for people, regardless of whether you live here or have come to stay for a day or two.
